Wuhan University professors participated in the South China Sea Security Roundtable and the launch of the "New Critiques of the South China Sea Arbitration Award" report in Hong Kong.

The event brought together over 100 experts, government officials, diplomats, and representatives from international organizations and media outlets from countries including Germany, Canada, and Australia.

Professor Huang Jiefang, secretary-general of the Asian Academy of International Law, emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the South China Sea amid profound global geopolitical shifts and increasing regional tensions.

He noted the growing instability in the area due to these dynamics and highlighted the urgent need to counter misinformation, correct misconceptions, and defend national sovereignty.

Professors Gao Shengti and Lei Xiaolu contributed to the first session, "New Critiques of the South China Sea Arbitration Award: Jurisdiction, Legal Flaws, and Practical Challenges". Professor Gao analyzed the legal misinterpretations by the arbitration tribunal concerning Article 121 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), criticizing the tribunal's rewriting of treaties and use of double standards.

Professor Lei discussed the tribunal's interpretative approach to changing island and reef environments due to rising sea levels, arguing it contradicts state practices and undermines efforts to address such environmental challenges.

Professor Yu Minyou spoke during the third session, "Maintaining Stability in the South China Sea: Law, Rules, and Order," where he critiqued the illegality and risks of the United States' cognitive, legal, hybrid, and political warfare strategies in the region.

He proposed strategic visions and specific strategies to strengthen China's maritime governance, improve the national maritime legal system, and build an integrated maritime governance framework to solidify the legal foundations for safeguarding national sovereignty, security, and development interests.
