The 2nd Antarctic Science Symposium, co-hosted by the Chinese Consulate-General in Christchurch and Wuhan University, was held in Christchurch, New Zealand, on July 31.

The event drew over 60 participants, including representatives from the Chinese Consulate-General in Christchurch, Wuhan University, and the Christchurch City Council, as well as experts, scholars, and PhD students from China and New Zealand specializing in Antarctic studies.

In her opening remarks, He Ying, the Chinese Consul-General in Christchurch, highlighted the strong academic partnership between Wuhan University and the University of Canterbury's Gateway Antarctica, noting their continued work in polar surveying, ecological monitoring, and capacity building. She expressed optimism that this symposium would further boost Sino-New Zealand cooperation in Antarctic research.

Officials from the Christchurch City Council's international relations office and Wuhan University's office of international affairs praised the symposium for fostering cooperation. They expressed commitment to using this platform to enhance Antarctic research collaboration and related industry development between the two sides.

At the symposium, more than 20 experts and scholars presented academic reports and personal experiences on a wide range of topics, including surveying, law, energy, environmental protection, biology, tourism, and climate. Participants also engaged in in-depth discussions on cutting-edge issues in Antarctic research.

Alongside the symposium, the Wuhan University delegation visited the Chinese Consulate-General in Christchurch and was invited to visit the University of Canterbury.
