Wuhan University (WHU) hosted the 2026 Seminar on the Progress of China’s Carbon Market Development and Cross-border Carbon Trading Cooperation from Sept 10 to 21, bringing together 31 participants from 16 countries.
This seminar, a significant initiative for South-South climate cooperation, introduced an innovative mentorship system that established a continuous communication channel between participants and Chinese experts, aiming to extend learning outcomes into multinational talent development, technology co-development, and industrial collaboration.
Participants shared insights on carbon market development tailored to their national contexts, analyzed practical implementation challenges, and provided case studies on global carbon pricing alignment and cross-border rule recognition.
Experts offered real-time feedback, highlighting China's practical experience as a reference for other nations.
Participants praised the seminar for its valuable insights. Karin from Brazil's Ministry of Finance noted that international cooperation is about understanding differences with curiosity, listening, and humility. Balisi from Botswana’s Ministry of Environment and Tourism expressed plans to adopt China's experiences in building a carbon market framework and develop an MRV (Measurement, Reporting, and Verification) system upon returning home.
Dahiru, a chief chemical engineer from Nigeria's Ministry of Environment, looked forward to incorporating emission reductions from Chinese new energy transportation projects into Nigeria’s carbon market through the MRV system.
China's South-South cooperation on climate change has conducted over 300 training sessions, covering more than 120 developing countries and serving thousands of participants.
This seminar represents an important practice for WHU, utilizing its academic strengths to develop global climate governance talent and expand international research cooperation.
