Li Zhongbin's team links Siberian forest fragmentation to road expansion

A team led by Professor Li Zhongbin from Wuhan University’s School of Remote Sensing and Information Engineering has published its latest study in Nature Ecology & Evolution, providing critical quantitative evidence for the conservation of high-latitude forests in northern Siberia and regional infrastructure planning.

The paper, Fourfold increase in fragmentation from road expansion in Siberian intact forests since 2000, reveals that road expansion has increased the fragmentation of Siberia's pristine forests by 4.3 times between 2000 and 2023.

The challenge of quantifying forest fragmentation in this region has been compounded by the limited spatial and temporal resolution of global road datasets.

To address these challenges, the team utilized Landsat satellite imagery to construct a high-resolution, long-term spatial dataset of roads covering Siberia from 2000 to 2023. Based on this dataset, the team assessed the impact of road construction on forest encroachment, edge effects, and carbon biomass loss.

They also analyzed the spatial correlation between road expansion and industrial activities such as mining and logging.

The spatial datasets of roads, mining, and logging in Siberia generated by this study have been made available globally, laying a solid data foundation for further exploration of the ecological evolution mechanisms of high-latitude northern Siberia forests.
