Founded in 1960, the School of Stomatology, Wuhan University (WHUSS), was the first dental school established entirely by the new Chinese government. In 2000, WHUSS became part of Wuhan University.

WHUSS has spearheaded and completed numerous national and international research initiatives, including projects funded by the National Natural Science Fund and collaborative programs with the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, and Hubei province. In recent years, it has secured 107 National Natural Science Fund grants and achieved three breakthroughs recognized with the second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award.
The hospital consistently ranks among the top 20 medical institutions in China for SCI publications. Notably, two doctoral dissertations from WHUSS have been distinguished for their exceptional quality and impact among national submissions.
