Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University is a modern, comprehensive tertiary Class-A hospital, integrating medical care, education, research, and preventive health services. Renowned for its specialized disciplines, advanced medical technologies, and culture of innovation, the hospital operates with 3,300 licensed beds and a team of over 4,200 staff members, led by top-tier medical experts.
Established in 1956, ZNWU is home to eight nationally recognized clinical key disciplines: urology, critical care medicine, oncology, general surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics, gastroenterology, and clinical nursing. It has earned designations such as the National Emergency Medical Rescue Base, the National Quality Control Center for Donated Organ Procurement, and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences' Wuhan Research Center for Infectious Diseases and Cancer. It also serves as a Demonstration Base for Innovative Talent Training under the Ministry of Science and Technology.
With 55 medical science and technology innovation platforms, ZNWU undertakes a significant number of national-level research projects, including key R&D programs, major scientific initiatives, and projects funded by the National Natural Science Fund. Its research findings are frequently published in prestigious medical journals such as The Lancet, JAMA, Nature and Cell. Several of its studies have been recognized as major medical advancements in China. In 2023, the hospital published the first original Nature paper of all hospitals in Hubei province with complete intellectual property rights. In 2024, the hospital won 93 projects approved by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, ranking 20th among hospitals nationwide.
ZNWU's Clinical College has achieved the highest accreditation from the Ministry of Education for its clinical medicine program. It consists of three academic departments, 31 teaching and research divisions, and offers doctoral and master's programs across multiple disciplines. These include two first-level doctoral programs and 20 second-level doctoral disciplines, as well as five first-level master's disciplines and 29 second-level master's disciplines. The college's distinguished faculty features 92 doctoral advisors and 310 master's advisors.
ZNWU has forged strong international collaborations. For the last 23 years, it has partnered with the University of Lorraine in France to operate the "Sino-French Medical Experimental Class" and has conducted the jointly recognized "French Resident Physician Training Program" for 12 years. It has also worked with the University of Chicago in the United States for 16 years to pioneer clinical medical education reforms.

ZNWU’s Emergency Medical Rescue Team was the first in Hubei province to gain national certification as a health emergency team.
The hospital also prioritizes the distribution of premium medical resources by establishing partnerships with over 70 grassroots hospitals and collaborating with institutions in Henan province, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, Anhui province, and Hainan province. During the COVID-19 pandemic, ZNWU demonstrated exemplary leadership by adopting a "1+3" treatment model across four key battlefronts: Wuhan No. 7 Hospital, Wuhan Dongxihu Mobile Cabin Hospital, Wuhan Leishenshan Hospital, and its main campus. It treated more COVID-19 patients than any other hospital in Wuhan.
