The Wanlin Art Museum at Wuhan University was funded by distinguished alumnus Chen Dongsheng, chairman and CEO of Taikang Insurance Group, and designed by renowned contemporary architect Zhu Pei. Inspired by the imagery of a fallen stone, the museum is surrounded by lush greenery, adjacent to the university’s central lake, and stands majestically beside Luojia Mountain. The museum spans 8,410 square meters, comprising one underground floor and three above-ground levels, with a total height of 28 meters.
Opened in 2015, the museum serves as a science popularization education base for Hubei province and is recognized as a second-level national museum. Its basement houses the museum’s permanent and essential exhibition, which showcases cultural relics, artworks, and animal specimens collected over Wuhan University's 130-year history. Highlights include achievements from the university’s archaeology and museology disciplines—featuring two "Top Ten National Archaeological Discoveries" — as well as scientific milestones from the Chinese Antarctic Center of Surveying and Mapping. The second floor hosts a dynamic rotating exhibition hall, displaying donations from faculty, alumni, and the public, alongside temporary exhibitions.
The museum's collection exceeds 15,000 items, including cultural relics, artworks, and animal specimens, with a special focus on bird specimens. In the nine years since its opening, the museum has hosted 80 temporary exhibitions through independent planning and collaborative introductions, and organized 106 educational and cultural activities. It has received over 3.1 million visitors, both from within the university and from the wider public.
The museum has become a cultural landmark of Wuhan University and an important base for historical, cultural, and art education.
