Every cherry blossom season, Wuhan University (WHU) finds new ways to surprise. This year, 11 extraordinary cherry trees in front of Dormitories 3 and 7 at the School of Engineering have quietly come into full bloom – each bearing three colors and four distinct shapes of flower on a single tree, creating a breathtaking spectacle.

These unique trees feature four early-blooming cherry varieties: Tsubaki-kan-zakura, with its pale pink petals tinged with red along the edges; the rich, cloud-like clusters of wild Himalayan cherry; Kan-hizakura, with its bell-shaped, rose-red blossoms; and the pure white, umbrella-shaped sprays of Hongfei cherry. Sharing a similar blooming period and belonging to the same genus, they are ideal candidates for grafting.

The idea came from Liu Tao, a WHU alumnus and current campus staff member. On Arbor Day in 2021, he began experimenting with grafting all four varieties onto a single tree. After years of careful cultivation, the "Luojia Multicolor Cherry" made its dazzling debut this spring – soft pink, rose red, and snow white blossoms blooming in harmony, drawing the eyes of students and faculty alike.

To further refine the visual balance of the blooms, Liu plans a second round of grafting to control the more vigorous varieties. He has also envisioned new projects like "Multicolor Cherry 2.0" and the heart-shaped "Intertwined Cherry". "Stay passionate, and dreams will come true," he says. Thanks to his dedication, the "Luojia Multicolor Cherry" is blossoming into a new springtime landmark on campus.
