Dragon boating at Wuhan University (WHU) has thrived since its inception in 2012, when a friendship race with Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) was launched.

This initiative has since evolved into a major cultural and sporting event for both universities and the entire city of Wuhan.

Over 400 students joined the university’s dragon boat team, with the ethos of "unity in the same boat and striving for excellence" forming a significant part of the university's dragon boat culture.

The team made its national debut in 2015 in Wanning, Hainan province. They have excelled internationally as well, winning two golds and a silver at the 2019 World Elite University Dragon Boat Regatta.

Their journey culminated in 2025 when they swept the Women's A Group with three championships, securing the top spot in the overall team rankings.

Dragon boat tug-of-war has grown rapidly as well. Introduced as a fun event in 2018, it became part of the university sports meet by 2022 and underwent significant improvements in 2025. The competition moved to the professional venue at East Lake Sailing Park, with a substantial increase in participation.

WHU introduced the dragon boat course in 2025, making it a mandatory part of freshman orientation. Under the guidance of coaches, new students learn the basics of dragon boating, experiencing its unique charm firsthand.

The university dragon boat association has grown to include over 300 enthusiasts from various departments, including humanities, engineering, and medicine, organizing weekly activities including physical training, rowing on East Lake, and competitions.
