The annual selection of National Excellent Doctoral Dissertations, started in 1999, aims at improving the quality of postgraduates, encouraging innovation and facilitating the growth of outstanding talents. The number of doctoral students receiving the National Excellent award serves as an important indicator of education institution quality. Compared to other top universities, WHU has had a high number of award winners and more award winners than all other higher education institutions in Wuhan.

Zhou Yezhong, Executive Vice-President of the Graduate School, notes that WHU has carried out various measures to improve the quality of doctoral dissertations, by setting up a foundational training process for quality dissertations,  strengthening the Supervisor Team’s collective guidance, regularly holding interdisciplinary forums for doctoral students, improving the dissertation defense system, establishing an anonymous peer reviewing system, and establishing prizes to reward excellent dissertations.
