However, they entered the final with first place in the semifinal. In the last round, though started slow, WHU rowers quickened the pace and beat Oxford, Cambridge and University of Sydney, etc. in the last 600 meters only behind Shanghai Jiaotong University.

The director of Shanghai Water Sports Center, Zhou Zhiyong said: “This is the first regatta. It is a great honor for all the competing teams.”

The two-day event was held in Dianshan Lake, Shanghai from July 15th to 16th. Nearly 300 athletes from 26 universities are competing in this Men’s eight single oar 2000-meter race.  The teams are divided into two groups. Group A is comprised of 12 teams of leading universities home and abroad while group B has 14 teams from Shanghai and other Chinese Universities.

The Rowing team of WHU was officially organized in May 2015 and it was its first attempt in World Leading University Rowing Competition.

The sport of rowing originated from the River Thames in Britain and is listed as one of the most popular sports by International Olympic Committee. Rowing is also a typical college sport famous for the competition between Cambridge and Oxford.
