Cricket Comes Home: Wuda Knight Riders lift the inaugural WISU Intra-University Cricket Champions Trophy 2017

The Trophies and Medals of Cricket Champions Trophy 2017

In collaboration with School of International Education, Wuhan University, the first edition of Intra-University Cricket Champions Trophy was successfully organized under the banner of WISU on May 14, 2017. The event was yet another exhibition of the vision of varsity administration to arrange diverse and wide range of extracurricular activities and recreation opportunities for students of University. The team registration was open for 5 days during which 7 teams including 3 from main campus and 4 from medical campus registered for this tournament.

All teams except one were named as a variant of International or well-famed club teams. The teams which registered to be part of tournament are given in alphabetical order: Bangladeshi Tigers, Black Stallions, Indian Warriors, Karachi Kings, Super Kings, Wuda Knight Riders and Wuhan Zalmi. The teams were led by Kazi Hasan Shaon, Gowtham Ram, Vishnu Tiwari, Samiullah Mir, Arunkumar Thankaraj, Hamid Hussain and Muan ur Rehman respectively.

After the conclusion of group matches, four teams- Indian Warriors, Super Kings, Wuda Knight Riders and Wuhan Zalmi- qualified for the semi-finals, where Indian Warriors defeated Wuhan Zalmi after a thrilling competition, while Wuda Knight Riders overcame Super Kings and reached the final of the championship.

The toss of the final game was won by Hamid Khattak, the captain of Wuda Knight Riders and he decided to bat first. Courtesy of a fine display of massive hitting, WKR set a formidable target of 100 for Warriors to lift the trophy. The target seemed always out of reach as WKR bowlers kept a tight line and length. In the end, Khattak-led Knight Riders won the final and thus became the champions of the inaugural WISU Intra-University Cricket Championship.

The post-match presentation ceremony was anchored by Roy Dilawer Khan, the author of this article and one of the organizers of the tournament. The players of Indian Warriors, the runner-up team of tournament, were presented with Silver Medals while WKR players were awarded the Gold Medals for their wonderful performance.

Other than team medals, four awards were decided to acknowledge best batsman, best bowler, best fielder and player of the tournament. For his excellent demonstration of skills with the bat which included match winning knocks in semi-final and final, Fahad Alam of WKR was awarded the Batsman of the Tournament title. For his disciplined bowling which resulted in 8 wickets, Ekansh Srivastav was presented with medal of the Bowler of the Tournament.

In fielding department, one man, Mahin Mohanan, stood apart from the rest for his acrobatic and athletic show behind the stumps and thus was adjudged Fielder of the Tournament. The most desired and dreamed-of award in any sports- Player of the Tournament- had many contenders but for his all-round presentation of cricket skills, the all-performing yet humble Rahul Dwivedi was announced as the best player of the day.

Later on, Mr. Owais Gillani, a senior PhD student and Sadiq Yusuf Musse, President of WISU, handed over the runner-up and Winners trophy to the captains of Indian Warriors and Wuda Knight Riders respectively.

The presenter, Roy Dilawer Khan, concluded the ceremony by appreciating the efforts and support of School of International Education and WISU Officials especially President Mr. Sadik Yusuf Musse and Sports Director Mr. Ali Diouf in making this event happen which at one time seemed nothing more than a dream.

Recent Development: The Certificate distribution ceremony of the Cricket Championship 2017 was held in the School of International Education on 16th June 2017 which was anchored by Roy Dilawer Khan. The Vice Dean Mr. Cheng distributed certificates of participation, recognition and excellence among the players. Vice Dean presented trophies to the captains of winning and runner-up teams. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Cheng stressed the Importance of sports in shaping character and career of students. He, besides acknowledging the efforts of the organizing committee, pledged his unwavering support and firm commitment to organize Cricket events in following days. He assured the students that such activities shall be always sponsored by School in coming semesters as well.
