To be able to land a scholarship for graduate school in the US is not just a piece of cake. But

Liu Yisi, a graduating senior majoring in preventive medicine at the School of Health Sciences, has achieved this insurmountable goal. She has already received Master/PhD offers and scholarships from Harvard University, Boston University, University of Washington, University of Southern California and several others. After careful consideration, she has decided to pursue her doctoral education in Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, University of Washington (Seattle), which will be fully funded by China Scholarship Council (CSC). She is the only student from Wuhan University to be awarded the CSC scholarship covering her tuition and living stipend to pursue a PhD in the U.S.

During her undergraduate years, she has maintained a high GPA of 3.8/4.0, scored 7.5 in IELTS and 330 in GRE and was ranked first in her class throughout these five years. Owing to such consistently outstanding academic performance, she was conferred national scholarship for three consecutive years. In 2017, she became a proud recipient of Leijun Scholarship, the scholarship started by WHU alumnus and Xiaomi founder Lei Jun in 2017.

In her past 5 years in School of Health Sciences, she has worked closely with her mentor--- Associate Professor Hao Xiang, and has conducted many scientific researches under his supervision. She attributes the college offers to her diverse research experience and she also suggests other aspiring students to develop a strong research expertise in their respective specialties. She sowed the seeds for her success in her sophomore year when she conducted her very first research exploring the association between air pollution and daily mortality in Wuhan. The findings of her research were published in a peer-reviewed SCI-indexed journal. After winning the 1st Award of Scientific Research Achievement of WHU, she was determined to carry out scientific research in environmental epidemiology and successfully headed the national undergraduate training program for innovation as project leader. She kept on moving forward on the path she had forged with her hard work and kept on adding feathers to her well- adorned hat.

She left no stone unturned to secure Globalink Research Internship of Mitacs in Canada, and worked with Prof. Stephen Birch in McMaster Univ. on health policy analysis to improve the control of latent tuberculosis infection. She was able to gain a more comprehensive understanding of public health from the perspective of health policy and infectious diseases.

As a part of her research plan in University of Washington, She has Set your sights on conducting a panel study in Chengdu, Sichuan, which has the second biggest number of private cars in China, to determine how traffic affect dwellers’ health. In the near future, she hopes to be proactively engaged in spreading awareness about environmental health issues and offer scientific basis for environmental governance policies in China. Her long-term goals involve implementing a strategy, what she calls “precision environmental health”, to look for sustainable and low-cost solutions in air quality management to prevent air pollution related diseases in China.
