Recently, Karim Masimov, one of Wuhan University (WHU)’s most distinguished alumnus, was re-appointed the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan. It was his third time to be appointed as the Prime Minister. President Xiaohong Li extended his timely congratulations to Mr. Masimov. In the congratulatory letter, President Li highly appreciated Mr. Masimov’s contribution to the mutual cooperation between WHU and universities in Kazakhstan. Furthermore, he invited Mr. Masimov to revisit WHU in the future.

From 1989 to 1992, Mr. Masimov studied in the School of Law, WHU. As a student majored in International Law, he performed so well that it only took him three years to complete the 4-year undergraduate courses. At that time, many WHU’s famous professors used to teach him, such as Kechang Ma, Huang Jin, Minyou Yu, Exiang Wan and so on. Though he left Wuhan University after graduation, Mr. Masimov has always cherished the memory and experience here. In October 2000, during his visit in China as the Minister of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Transport and Communication, he came all the way to Wuhan University and paid his visit to the dormitory he once lived. Eight years later, Mr. Masimov once again visited WHU as the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan and was awarded with an honorary doctorate as well as the WHU Outstanding Alumnus.

It was his close relation with China that made Mr. Masimov a famous “China Hand”. He also acted as a messenger who has made a great contribution to the dialogue and exchange between two peoples and two countries. Mr. Masimov has always been strongly supportive of the mutual cooperation between Wuhan University and Kazakh universities. Since 2013, Wuhan University and Kazakh Abaikan University of International Relations and World Languages have carried out a double-degree joint training program in the field of Law, Diplomacy and International Economics and Trade. This semester, the first cohort of 44 students will graduate. With the concerted effort of both sides, currently there are as many as 215 Kazakh students studying at Wuhan University, which ranks the third largest group of international students on campus.

As WHU’s alumni, Mr. Masimov has set a great role model to follow. His experience will be a strong driving force that motivates WHU students to enhance the cooperation and communication between Wuhan University and rest of the world.
