The 6th WHU Model UN- an international relations stimulation for WHU students-was held over a period of 22-24 April with the participation of Chinese and Foreign students. It was an opportunity for delegates to gain insight into the dynamics of international relations and the workings of the UN by assuming the roles of diplomats and members of other international bodies and national cabinets and representing the relevant views of the assigned member state.
The delegates partook in a welcome trip, a social event and five sessions of MUN discussions on the refugees’ problems. MUN provides a platform for students to debate issues that confront world leaders and to draft resolutions in response to these global issues. Participants developed their abilities to work with others who were equally motivated and passionate about the topics of debate and to respond to global concerns with a thorough understanding of the promises and pitfalls of high-level international diplomacy
Many of the delegates were first timers to Model UN and the background guide gave them an insight about the goals, accomplishments, limits, and powers of the UN and the international system. The delegates had to adapt their research in a UN format and submit position papers on their topic areas prior to the conference with substantial policy innovation. Working papers were collected and circulated among delegates to debate upon with equanimity and calmness and eventually edified into a formal resolution written in actual UN style. After its formal introduction in the committee, the succinct policy resolution were debated, amended, and voted on by the delegates. The delegates had to demonstrate their level of research, personal drive, and diplomatic ability and speak extemporaneously in the committee.
The delegates were bestowed upon an opportunity to delve into such detailed and often complicated issues in a small-group setting and the skills fostered in this three day-long rendezvous will surely be invaluable for all the students.
