The 2019-2020 academic year is underway. On Sept 8, Zall Gymnasium witnessed over 7200 freshman undergraduates full of vigor and vitality, wearing the school badge and well-designed white or orange T-shirt, who are desperate to start a brand new life at the foot of Luojia Hill.

There were university leaders, academicians, senior professors of the humanities and social science, faculty representatives, and all the new undergraduates, attending the convocation.

“At this moment, 7232 new undergraduates gather by the side of the scenic East Lake, at the foot of Luojia Hill. I would like to extend my warmest welcome to all of you on behalf of the faculty.” Dou Xiankang, president of Wuhan University, kicked off the ceremony with an inspiring speech, titled as “Shoulder the mission of the era, so as to unfold a promising life.”

President Dou advocated that in its 126 years of development, WHU has unveiled its sense of responsibility in all aspects, on which he later elaborated it from four perspectives, “This sense of responsibility is reflected from its profound patriotic feeling for the nation, constant pursuit of perfection on the path of academics, innovation-driven quality as well as humanistic concern for all.” He also expressed his expectation for the new generation of WHUers to inherit the spirit of the campus with great aspiration, broad horizon and open mind.

This year is the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. As a way to celebrate this event, there was a special activity held in the opening convocation: a huge National Flag of the PRC was passed hand by hand amid the students in a resounding chorus of March of the Volunteers, carrying enthusiastic patriotism of the new generation of WHUers. Students pieced red paper cards together to form figures from 10 to 70, representing their sincere salute to the seven-decade brilliant journey of Chinese national rejuvenation. “May our great motherland thrive and prosper!” students expressed their deep love and affection for China.
