A boost for Sino-German cooperation --Meeting with representatives of German universities in China held in WHU

At 16:00 on May 26, a meeting between Wuhan University and representatives of German universities in China was held in the lecture hall of the Information Department of WHU,. hosted by Gui Ling, the deputy director of the Office of International Affairs of WHU.

During the meeting, representatives from different German universities and institutions introduced their respective institutions and spoke about their current international projects. Ms. Ren Jie from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) mentioned that the DAAD sponsored over 4,000 projects every year, including five collaborative projects with German research institutions and 14 double degree programs across China. Ms. Liu Jie referred to the concept of engineer training practiced at the RWTH Aachen, which provides students not only with cutting-edge theoretical knowledge but also works closely with industry to implement the concept of combining theory and practice. Ms. Jin Zhenshan said that the Technische Universität München has 15 faculties and nearly 180 courses, and about half of the master’s courses were taught in English.

Hu Sijia from the Office of International Affairs of WHU introduced WHU’s key international exchange programs and emphasized the university’s strong interest in collaboration with German universities on talent development for international organizations, area studies and student management.

College representatives from WHU expressed a strong desire to strengthen communication with German universities. Zhao Bo, the executive deputy president of the School of Cyber Science and Engineering, pointed out that the most important step was to stimulate cooperation between the tutors in the two countries, which would spontaneously lead to communication at the levels of doctoral candidates and graduate-level students. Zhang Shenwei, the vice director of the German Department in the School of Foreign Languages and Literature, expressed his hope to restart the graduate program in German-language with the Universität Jena. Meanwhile, he shared his intention to invite more German professors to deliver courses in WHU.

After the first meeting, the representatives came to the lecture hall in the School of Resource and Environmental Sciences to have a special promotional activity on how to pursue a doctoral degree in Germany and to introduce current scholarship regulations.

The meeting was held online and offline simultaneously, which attracted over 40 on-the-spot students and 38 online viewers. The representatives introduced the advantages and requirements of the doctoral programs for master’s and current doctoral students. They stressed each city’s strong points as well as the various disciplines main features, application requirements and sponsorship application procedures of each school.

WHU has established collaboration with 11 German universities, including Technische Universität München. The specific forms of collaboration cover student exchange, joint training, scientific research cooperation and a Confucius Institute.
