(Reporter:Kanghua Yang, Yinghua Chen) On June 1st, the 2018 undergraduate professional lecture conference planned by our school was held on time in Room 403, No. 10 teaching building at 8:00 a.m. Present at this conference were Siming Wang, deputy secretary of party committee of the school, teachers of various majors, and students entering the sophomore year when the major choice is just around the corner.
The specialties preached included Machinery Manufacturing and Automation, Material Forming Machine Control Engineering, Metal Materials and Engineering, Energy and Power Engineering(A or B), Energy Chemical Engineering and Nuclear Engineering and Technology.
After Siming Wang briefly introduced the process of the meeting, teachers of different majors began to deliver their addresses. As for the seven majors that students can choose freely in principle, each teacher illustrated the running conditions, student scale, research direction and employment prospect of their own majors. For instance, the research directions of Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation involve intelligent robot and chip manufacturing; one of the research directions of Energy Power Engineering is energy conservation and emission reduction; majoring in Nuclear Engineering and Technology, you can be exposed to the power generation principle of nuclear power plants. To put it in a nutshell, each major has its own field of specialization and attractive and diversified research directions. At the meeting, all teachers expressed their passion and devotion for their majors which were conveyed to all students present.
After I inquired several classmates around me, I figured it out that what they mainly focused on were three aspects of their majors just as follows. The first is whether I am fond of my major or not, the second is whether the level of employment rate is high or not, and the last is whether the teaching ability of the major is awesome or not. These three points are in descending order of priority. Some people hold the view that we must choose the major we have great interests in, or the job we are engaged in in the future will not be what we once had dreamed about, which is definitely a very disheartening thing. Others are convinced that we should take what suits us rather than what we like due to the fact that only by choosing a major that fits us well can we truly bring our superiority into full play and finally make a tremendous triumph. Possibly there is some truth lying in these opinions to some extent, but the selection of major still needs to be taken seriously by us students.
At the end of the conference, Siming Wang summed up the meeting succinctly, saying, 'no matter what major you chose, you have always been a student of our faculty of power and mechanics.' Eventually, the method of dividing majors is that every student will fill in a form earnestly with three majors, namely, the first, second and third voluntary major. Each major admits students in batches according to their volunteer order.
