Song Baoliang is the current vice-president of Wuhan University (WHU). He is a member of the Communist Party of China. Born in January 1975, he holds a PhD, acts as a PhD supervisor and is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He is also the head of different academic units in WHU, including the College of Life Sciences, the Taikang Medical School (School of Basic Medical Sciences), and the Taikang Life Sciences Center.
His research focuses on cholesterol metabolism, and he has made a series of significant original discoveries. He has clarified the molecular pathway of cholesterol absorption in the small intestine, revealed a regulatory pathway of cholesterol synthesis, discovered a new pathway and approach to intracellular cholesterol transport, and identified the novel cholesterol-modified protein, all of which have provided new ideas and theoretical foundation for the research and development of hypolipidemic agents. As a corresponding author, he has published more than 50 papers in journals such as Nature, Science and Cell. His research findings have been selected twice for inclusion in China’s Top 10 Advances in Life Sciences. He has received the Tan Kah Kee Young Scientist Award, the China Youth Science and Technology Award, the Xplorer Prizeand others. He also serves as the vice-president of the Chinese Society for Cell Biology, and the leader of the expert group of the major research plan “spatiotemporal network regulation of glycolipid metabolism” supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
