On May 16, 2012, the launching ceremony of Wuhan University (WHU) WD-1 Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel was held along with the inaugurating ceremony of Structural Wind Engineering Institute, a joint project between WHU’s College of Civil Engineering and Guangdong Electric Power Design Institute (GEDI).

Present at the ceremony were Qin Shunquan, a fellow of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Jiang Changzhong, WHU’s Vice President; Peng Xueping, GEDI’s Chief Engineer; Xu Lihua, head of WHU’s College of Civil Engineering, as well as various experts from eminent design institutes and WHU scholars. Li Chuanyi, Secretary of CPC Committee of College of Civil Engineering, moderated the ceremony.

At the signing ceremony, Professor Liang Shuguo, the Director of Structural Wind Engineering Institute, explained the intricacies of the wind tunnel construction project. Ge Yaojun, Chairman of China Civil Engineering Society Structural Wind Engineering Committee, also delivered remarks.

Equipped with an advanced pressure measurement system, 3D fluctuating wind speed detector and laser displacement meter, this is the first boundary layer wind tunnel in Hubei Province, which will play an important role in designing and studying wind-resistant structures in Hubei Province and WHU’s studies on wind engineering.
