On 22nd, October 24, Tim Yeo, South Suffolk MP and chairman of the Energy and Climate Change Committee (ECCC), visited Wuhan University to discuss about the Emissions Trading System (ETS) in Hubei and explore opportunities for relevant cooperation between Britain and China. Feng Youmei, Executive President of Wuhan University and other representatives met them.
This was the first time Yeo and his committee members visited Wuhan. In 2012, they visited other big cities in China and published a report on low carbon growth links with China. They found that China is at the top in the low-carbon investment and its actions are crucial in the global efforts to reduce emissions.
Prof Qi Shaozhou, from Climate Change, Energy and Environment Study Center of Wuhan University, briefed the background and policy features of Hubei ETS pilot. As the sole ETS pilot in Central China, Hubei is becoming a powerful competitor in the green industrial revolution. High GDP growth rate and investment growth rate in the last several years, as well as heavy and chemical industry structure make this province important in China’s plan to tackle the global challenge of climate change.
The United Kingdom’s Energy and Climate Change Committee is appointed by the House of Commons to examine the expenditure, administration and policy of the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and its associated public bodies. It has 11 Members and is chaired by Mr Tim Yeo MP.
