WHU for the First Time Honored with the National Science and Technology Progress Award and the Innovation Team Award

A Total of 6 Science and Technology Programs Rewarded

On January 9th, 2014 the National Annual Science and Technology Awards Conference was held by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council. WHU won six awards, among which the Earth Observation and Navigation Technology team was honored with the National Science and Technology Progress Award and the Innovation Team Award. Two outcomes WHU presided separately won second prizes of National Technological Invention Award and National Science and the Technology Progress Award, and other three outcomes WHU participated in won second prizes of National Science and Technology Progress Award.

The National Science and the Technology Progress Award and Innovation Team Award were set up in 2012 and since then a total of nine teams were honored. WHU is the second Institution of Higher Educationdirectly under the administration of Ministry of Education to get this award, after Tsinghua University.

Among the members of the Earth Observation and Navigation Technology Innovation team there are: Deren Li, Jingnan Liu, Liangpei Zhang, Qingquan Li, Chuang Shi, Huayi Wu, Mi Wang, Nengcheng Chen, Qi Le Zhao, Xiaoling Chen, XinYan Zhu, Hai Gang Sui, Mingsheng Liao, Guo Zhang and so on. The team relies on the National Key Laboratory of Information Engineering of Surveying and Remote Sensing as well as the National Research Center of Satellite Positioning Systematic Engineering Technology. The team continues to gather talents, and gradually develops an open, inclusive, enterprise, united and self-demanding team culture, along with the integration of theoretical research, technological innovation and industrial application, which build up this team’s characteristics. The team is one of the most influential in this field worldwide, having as a long-term focus on subject frontier and addressing China’s major needs. It has produced a number of international advanced achievements under the guidance of three academicians: Li Deren, Liu Jingnan and Gong Jianya.

As a member of the Chinese Academy of Science, Yuanxi Yang stated in an interview, the team armed with "real and hard power" is aiming at fulfilling the national needs and the academic forefront, combining theory with practical applications. The team which continues to show full scientific vitality and innovative strength has given rich achievements and excellent outputs. The awards are well-deserved.

In addition, second prize of Science and Technology Progress Award have been conferred to Professor Ju Tang from Electrical Engineering College, , presiding over the completion of the "Key Technology and Its application of UHF Partial Discharge Monitoring of Gas-Insulated Equipment" and Professor of the National Research Center of Satellite Positioning Systematic Engineering Technology, Chuang Shi, presiding over the completion of the "Key Technology and Application of Wide Range of Real-time and Precise Positioning".

The "Key Technology Research and Application of Purification and Detection of Reagents Used in Trace Analysis", which Professor Yuqi Feng from  Chemical and Molecular Sciences College participated in and the "Technology System and Engineering Applications of National Geography Information Updating", which Professor Li Pan from School of,Remote Sensing and Information Engineering , participated, were awarded separately the second prizes of Science and Technology Progress Award. Apart from the awards already showcased, an exclusive project WHU participated in won the second prize of Science and Technology Progress Award.

It is reported that the 2014 National Annual Science and Technology Awards conferred distinctions to 318 research results, eight scientific experts and a foreign organization. The famous nuclear physicist, and a member of the Chinese Academy of Science, Min Yu was honored with the National Science and Technology Top Award for his contribution in the research of atomic and hydrogen bombs and man-made satellites.
